Campaign for Safer Alternatives (CASA) is a Pan-African, non-profit organization working at the international level to realize 100 percent smoke-free environments across Africa. We serve as a unifying voice for consumer organizations advocating for tobacco harm reduction throughout the continent, facilitating the exchange of evidence, policy proposals, and action strategies to reduce tobacco-related risk.
With over 77 million smokers on the African continent and an estimated 250,000 annual fatalities from smoking-related illnesses, the public health burden is both urgent and immense. While cessation remains the most effective way to reduce harm, CASA recognizes that not all smokers will—or can—quit entirely.
To address this reality, we promote innovative, science-backed solutions designed to support both cessation and harm reduction. In addition to behavioral interventions and nicotine-replacement therapies (NRTs), we advocate for access to reduced-risk, non-combustible alternatives to combustible tobacco—options that offer dramatically lower health risks than conventional cigarettes.
Aligned with the broader goals of global tobacco regulation, we actively support tobacco control initiatives, including Article 14 of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), while building a platform for progressive harm-reduction policy. Our ambition is to ensure that all African smokers have access to safer, more sustainable pathways to reduce or eliminate tobacco-related harm.
